What is a subscription database anyway?
And why should I use one?

A database is simply an organized collection of related information.  On some databases you can search for digital versions of magazine and newspaper articles.  On others you can access information in a specific subject area (like science or social studies) written especially for the database.  E-books are electronic versions of books originally in print version.

Our school district subscribes to many databases  and we strongly encourage students to make use of them.  Subscription databases offer several important advantages over searching the free Internet:

  • Trustworthy - published by reputable companies
  • Age appropriate
  • Searchable
  • Updated regularly
  • Free of advertisements
  • Unbiased
  • May contain information not available on the free Internet, including primary source documents

Watch the video below to see how subscription databases compare to Google and Wikipedia!

NOTE: This video promotes ProQuest, a specific database company, but the concepts apply to all the Seven Bridges databases.
NOTE: Students will not be able to view this video while at Seven Bridges, but it should load without a problem on home computers.
